A 1 Windows and Macintosh characters
When it comes to Windows 98/NT4 and Macintosh character translation, it must be considered that Macintosh and Windows character encoding utilizes 8-bit values which are not always mutually compatible. A well-known example are special characters, e.g. "umlauts".
Thus, in order to provide proper file name exchange between the different platforms, the "Unicode/UTF-8" encoding can be applied (see also 6.4 "uniconv").
Notwithstanding, there are some characters which are not displayable at all on the other system. The following tables show the characters in question, categorized by the operating system, and their respective hexadecimal value.
Fig. A-1 shows Windows 98 (left) and Windows NT4 (right) characters which the Macintosh cannot display.
Fig. A-2 shows Macintosh characters which Windows 98 cannot display. Similarly, Macintosh characters not displayable by Windows NT4 are shown in Fig. A-3.
