1 About the chapters of this manual
In the following, we give a brief summary of each chapter in this manual. These summaries facilitate finding the information you are looking for.
Chapter "Using the manual" explains how to read and understand the manual. The chapter gives information about the manual version, the structure of the contents, and the meaning of font and syntax conventions.
Chapter "Introduction" gives background information about the components that make up HELIOS Base 1.1, as well as network hardware and topology in general.
Software installation on the server
Chapter "The Base product" covers the installation of the HELIOS Base 1.1 software and the HELIOS "license" program.
Chapter "HELIOS directory structure" presents the new HELIOS directory structure and analyzes the content of each subdirectory in detail.
Chapter "HELIOS utility programs" introduces HELIOS utilities, e.g. HELIOS' Unicode conversion tool "uniconv".
In "HELIOS Preferences" all preferences of HELIOS Base are listed, and it is explained what they effect when set.
Chapter "Service Location Protocol (SLP)" is a feature of HELIOS Base 1.1, which allows users under UNIX systems to find available services without any knowledge of host names. This chapter explains how it works.
"The Service Controller" is, like SLP, a feature of HELIOS Base 1.1. It prevents the failure of the server process for a single client from bringing down all the served clients on the network. This chapter explains how it works.
"HELIOS LPR printing system" is the printing system of HELIOS Base 1.1. This chapter explains how it is configured through the UNIX configuration file "printcap".
Chapter "Uninstalling the HELIOS software" is a useful guideline on the uninstallation of the HELIOS software from the server.
Chapter "The HELIOS Update Installer" introduces the improved HELIOS program which is now automatically installed during the software installation.
Additional information
Appendix "Windows and Macintosh characters" shows the differences in displaying Windows and Macintosh characters.
Appendix "IP configuration - Reference Part" gives background information about IP addresses, masks and how to control access to the host.
Appendix "Technical notes" describes the printer and server log file structures, listes the TCP/IP ports which are used by the HELIOS software, and in addition gives some thoughts on UNIX kernel tuning.
Appendix "Glossary" explains some product-related terminology.
