HELIOS PDF Handshake 2.0 User manual |
EtherShare OPI 2.1 is not necessarily required for running PDF Handshake, but would considerably extend the functionality of PDF Handshake (e.g. layout generation of PDF files and the "Export for Imposition" feature).
PDF Handshake, as described in this manual, requires the current update level (see chapter "Welcome to PDF Handshake 2.0"). This update level will be installed automatically if you install EtherShare, EtherShare OPI, PDF Handshake from our current CD-ROM. In case you have installed the products from a previous CD-ROM (e.g. CD 016) you have to install the required updates separately. For advice on update installations, please refer to paragraph Future updates in chapter 4.2 "General remarks" below.
- CD-ROM drive on the server
- about 20 MB hard disk space for the PDF Handshake software on the server and additional 40 MB for the ICC profiles we deliver for color matching (the ICC profiles are already installed on your system if you are using EtherShare OPI 2.1)
- at least 32 MB RAM on the server, 64 MB RAM recommended; 4 MB per print device
- Client computers running Mac OS 7.0 or newer (system 7.5 or newer is recommended)
- Adobe Acrobat Exchange or Reader software 3.0 or later (optional - for using our PDF print features from a Macintosh client)
- PostScript compatible printer (Level 1, Level 2, or PostScript3)
- any PostScript printer connection that smoothly co-operates with EtherShare 2.6
Note: For installing PDF Handshake, you have to be able to log in as "root" on your host.
This chapter describes a standard installation and gives short explanations, if necessary. Please remember that all activities you have to perform are marked by an "instruction" arrow in the left margin. For a quick installation, you may proceed directly from one instruction to the other and skip the explanations in between.
The server installation is executed by two separated programs. The first program ("install.sh") must be started from the CD-ROM. It lets you select the product you want to install and copies all related files and the product specific installation program to the local disk of your server computer. Then, the product specific installation program (here: "install") is started automatically from the local disk and guides you through the installation procedure.
If you install PDF Handshake from the current CD-ROM, all available updates are installed automatically during the installation procedure. Else, if the software is already installed on your system, you have to add new updates from the respective CD-ROMs manually, as described below:
Updates are contained in the /updates directory on our CD-ROMs. Detailed information about the updates are given in the /support/techinfo directory, in the uxxxx.txt text files.
For update installation, use our update installer. The tool is able to find and install all updates that are required for a particular software product.
Mount the CD-ROM, open the "Networking Products Installer CD-ROM" menu as described in chapter 4.3.2 "The installation procedure", select item Install Updates, and choose Express Update from the menu.
PDF Handshake can be activated without a license (in demo mode), with a demo license, or with a full license (regular activation key). The demo mode is only sensible for testing purposes, because a HELIOS demo banner will automatically be printed across every printout (and layout file). Furthermore, access to the program's server fonts will be restricted - you cannot use them for printing. A demo license will expire after a given period of time; there are no restrictions in functionality. The distribution of demo licenses, however, is limited. Please ask your dealer for details.
If you want to make use of PDF Handshake without restrictions and time limits you have to enter your individual software activation key during the installation procedure on your server computer. In case you have no activation key at hand, please follow the instructions given in paragraphs License information and What you have to do in chapter "Welcome to PDF Handshake 2.0" at the beginning of this manual.
EtherShare 2.6 and all updates required for the current update level must be installed on your server and should have been tested successfully (see also chapter 4.1 "System requirements").
Note: The PDF Handshake installation does not change or affect your individual EtherShare or EtherShare OPI configuration.
During the installation, you are guided by menu-driven programs. Most questions in these programs have a default answer which is given in brackets. You can accept this default by simply pressing ENTER or type an alternative answer. If there is nothing within the brackets, the system will expect an entry from you.
Important: The following example describes the installation on a Sun computer. Slight deviations may occur - depending on your system type and configuration.
Before starting the installation of PDF Handshake, you should stop all EtherShare activities on the server. Make sure that all EtherShare users are logged out and there are no active print jobs. During the installation, EtherShare - and, if necessary, OPI - will be stopped automatically.
Then place the CD-ROM in the CD drive of your server computer and enter the mount and install commands which may be different for different platforms. The correct commands for your specific computer are stated in the booklet we enclose to our CD-ROM.
As soon as you have entered the last command, the "Networking Products Installer CD-ROM" menu will appear.
The program will now display a list of the currently available disk space. This list can help you find an adequate directory for PDF Handshake.
Select the directory you want to install the product in (the default directory is /usr/local/oipdf) and then start the installation procedure:
Important: The next command will - if you choose y (yes) - stop EtherShare on your server.
Starting the installation will stop the base product EtherShare currently running on the system. If there are users connected to the system, make sure these users log out first.
Now, specify the location of your EtherShare base product (the program suggests the directory it has detected, e.g. /usr/local/es).
You have now proceeded to the menu that leads you through the product specific installation procedure. The first two menu items deal with the installation. The third item serves to uninstall PDF Handshake (see also chapter 4.3.3 "Uninstalling PDF Handshake") and Display README file may be selected if you want to check the latest information about the product.
Note: Some PDF Handshake files will be merged into the EtherShare directory. The installation program, however, saves a copy of the original EtherShare files before overwriting them. The copies, which are marked by the extension ".nopdf", may be used for restoring pure EtherShare on the server, e.g. if PDF Handshake is not running as expected.
Important: The prompt is skipped if you already have an "ICC-Profiles" volume on your server (e.g. if you have installed EtherShare OPI). In that case, the installation program will open this volume and replace the existing profiles in the HELIOS subfolders by the new profiles from our CD-ROM.
The ICC profiles on our CD-ROM need about 40 MB disk space. The installation program displays a list of the available disk space and sets a default directory for the profiles volume. You can accept or replace the default entry.
Important: You may not delete the ICC-Profiles volume later, even if you do not use it for color matching explicitly. Some server processes use the profiles stored on this volume. So, deleting the volume would disable PDF Handshake.
Enter the data given on your "Activation Key Reply" form (see Fig. 0-1 in chapter "Welcome to PDF Handshake 2.0"):
Note: If you skip the above procedure the program will run in demo mode. If you have received a demo activation key and want to use it instead of a full license you have to enter during the above procedure your PDF Handshake serial number, the expiration date and the checksum. See chapter 4.3.1 for details about keys.
The installation program will check whether your license is valid. If it is not, e.g. because of a typing error, you have to repeat the licensing procedure. The prompt for a correct license is as follows:
Note: If you want to install PDF Internet Printing now, choose menu item 3) Install Internet Printing files. The installation procedure is described in detail in chapter 16.3.1 "Installation with the "PDF Handshake Installation Menu"".
Now you may either choose item 5 from the menu to read the last minute info file, or quit the PDF Handshake installation program as shown below.
Once you have finished the installation from our CD-ROM, you can, at any time, start the product specific "install" program from your server. This program may be used to install and to uninstall PDF Handshake.
Item 1 (Install programs ...) from the "PDF Handshake Installation Menu" serves to expand your EtherShare installation by PDF Handshake.
In case you want to remove PDF Handshake and replace it by your old EtherShare installation again, you have to proceed as follows:
Make sure that all EtherShare - and OPI - users are logged-off on the server and that there are no active print jobs.
After that, the script stops EtherShare on your server and then re-creates your old EtherShare version by using the files bearing the ".nopdf" extension. These backup files have been created automatically during the PDF Handshake installation and contain the old version of your EtherShare installation. The moment you quit the "PDF Handshake Installation Menu", EtherShare will be started again on your server.
Your "EtherShare Applications" volume contains all installable Macintosh applications that belong to EtherShare, PDF Handshake - and EtherShare OPI if that product has been installed on the server as well. The volume always contains the latest versions of the Macintosh applications. If you install any HELIOS updates by means of the update installer, the contents of this volume will be updated automatically and the items on this volume can then be used to replace older copies of the applications that exist on the local hard disks of your Macintosh client computers.
Mount the volume by using the Apple Chooser (as shown in Fig. 12). By the way: You will find that the "ICC-Profiles" volume appears in the Chooser window as well. This volume has been created during server installation and should be mounted later when setting up PDF Handshake.
Fig. 6: Mounting the "EtherShare Applications" volume
The "PDF Handshake" and "HELIOS Plate Control" plug-ins contain all HELIOS features for printing, file export, and separation plate manipulation. They are meant for Acrobat Exchange or Reader version 3 or later.
Important: If you are using Acrobat Reader 3.x - 4.0, you must use the "PDF Handshake, Reader 3-4.0" instead of the "PDF Handshake" plug-in.
Copy the "PDF Handshake" (or "PDF Handshake, Reader 3-4.0") and the "HELIOS Plate Control" plug-in from the "Acrobat Plug-Ins" folder to the "Plug-Ins" subfolder inside your Acrobat program folder (compare figures 7 and 8). Both plug-ins will be available after the next restart of the Acrobat or Acrobat Reader application.
