Apple fixed this issue in the OS X 10.8.2 update.
Now NIS works properly and can be used with the HELIOS services.

NIS does not work on OS X 10.8

OS X 10.8 “Mountain Lion” does allow a NIS configuration via “Directory Utility”. It works using command line tools like “ssh”. However a GUI login of a NIS user does not work. Also it is not possible to perform a login via the HELIOS services.

We reported this problem already to Apple.

We will update this Tech Info as soon as new information is available.
